King John’s CastleOn the border of the counties of Limerick and Clare, on the banks of the Shannon River, there is another pearl of Ireland - the castle of King John. It was built in 1200-1212, and then expanded and rebuilt many times. In the middle of the 17th century, the city and the castle were captured and devastated by Cromwell.King John’s Castle has an excellent museum where you can learn about the history of Limerick, see the reconstructed Viking dwellings that were found here during excavations, and explore the medieval castle fortifications. The exposition is divided into archaeological and underground zones. You can also visit the castle itself with its observation towers, ramparts and large courtyard.© Evgeni Fabisuk / Shutterstock #CastlesofIreland
